Agriculture is the most important economic sector in Africa. It employs about two-thirds of the continent’s workforce and contributes, on average, 30-60% of each country’s gross domestic product and about 30% of the value of exports. However, lands with arable land and permanent crops make up only about 6% of Africa’s total land area.

With the exception of countries with significant European ancestry such as South Africa, Zimbabwe and Kenya, agriculture is largely limited to subsistence farming and relies heavily on inefficient mobile tillage systems that work the land temporarily with simple tools. Until fertility decreases and the soil is left to regenerate for a while.
